2. Visioning & Concept Plan

The City of Passaic is on the move.  Signs of growth and development are visible throughout the city. The recently adopted City of Passaic Master Plan 2013 puts forth a vision that will guide this growth.  The Master Plan underscores the incredible wealth of assets that the City of Passaic has developed and built upon throughout its history.  From an incredible stock of buildings and roadway network to a community workforce of more than 30,000, it is clear that Passaic has all of the elements of a great city.  And at its center is Main Avenue in the heart of downtown.

Arterial was selected to provide the City of Passaic with a vision for the redesign of Main Ave that would promote pedestrian safety along with economic growth. The proposed framework for Main Ave expands the existing public square, relocates the bus terminal to the central median just a few blocks from the location of a future parking deck and connects the two with a pedestrian & bicycle promenade. The center median promenade replaces parking and shifts it to reverse angle + parallel parking along the expanded sidewalk edges. This space allows for safe pedestrian and bicycle movement between the two anchors and can accommodate various programmatic elements such as food trucks, temporary vendors and a permanent food kiosk. Other key elements of this streetscape include corner bump-outs, high-visibility crosswalks, street trees, light fixtures with banners and street furniture.
