The Township of Bloomfield began this initiative to support a grass-roots effort by local store owners. This corridor has developed into an interesting and burgeoning restaurant district with unique storefronts and signage. However, narrow sidewalks, speeding cars and traffic congestion were limiting the area's growth potential.
Arterial was commissioned to redesign this corridor as a vibrant commercial corridor and "complete street" that is safe and comfortable for all users. The final design is a high-impact, cost-effective solution that allows for easy implementation, maintenance and sustainability within the means of the Township. Currently dominated by vehicles, the sidewalks will be widened from 6’ to 10’ with additional space provided at the intersections. These curb bump-outs will provide space for outdoor seating, cafes and street trees while also shortening the crossing distance for pedestrians. A rhythm of streets, unique street trees, and decorative banners now line the street and brand this commercial district. In addition to these elements, new street furniture, enhanced bus shelters, and high-visibility ergo-crosswalks have transformed this once car-dominated corridor into a vibrant pedestrian space.
