Once the center of American industry as the site of the world's premiere shipbuilding operation, Kearny Point is in the midst of a transformation into an office and light manufacturing complex. The complex supports a variety of business types from small incubators to larger manufacturing/logistics-oriented businesses. The district is ideally situated between Newark and Jersey City, making it easily accessible from anywhere within the New York City area. A variety of open spaces and plazas stitch the industrial buildings together into a cohesive, campus-style business district.
Arterial was approached by the developer to design the main access road from Routes 1 & 9. The concept envisioned the street as a multi-modal corridor that is both authentic to the industrial roots of the site as well as ecologically responsible to the realities of flooding. The unique challenge was that the street needed to accommodate a variety of users, from large tractor trailers and cars to pedestrians and bicyclists. A series of improvements were outlined that centered on the creation of a promenade that features a separated two-way cycle track and pedestrian path for the entire length of the street. Native plantings and bioswales were introduced to add aesthetic beauty while assisting in stormwater management and runoff treatment. Other features included tabled intersections, high visibility crosswalks, new lighting with banners, street furniture and a new plaza associated with a pedestrian only street.
