Union Center is the economic and civic heart of the Township of Union. Stuyvesant Avenue is home to long-time Union businesses and serves as the primary corridor for several annual parades and festivals. Looking toward new strategies for revitalizing downtown businesses and creating a new, unified look and feel for downtown, the Township of Union reached out to Arterial to design a new streetscape for Union Center.
The streetscape project includes new bump-outs, lighting, and sidewalks, as well as enhanced corner designs and tree pits, both with seating and brick pavers with granite set accents. A central feature of this project is a raised mid-block crossing that slows traffic while creating a safe crossing for pedestrians, many of whom already cross mid-block between traffic. Other highlights are the engraved granite bands at the corners and the mid-block crossing that reflect the founding of Union as a colonial village called Connecticut Farms, as well as Union’s pivotal role in the Revolutionary War.
